about
When I was growing up, my family would make the trek from North Carolina up to the Jersey shore to spend our summers with my grandparents at their beach house. It was basically an annual trip to get away from the rigors of school life back home in NC. We would spend days out at the beach only to come back home and have a sunset cocktail hour before enjoying a grilled seafood dinner, usually cooked by my granddad.
A couple years before I was born, my granddad completely lost his hearing, but that didn't stop him from enjoying every bit of being with his family down at the shore. He loved singing songs from college while my Nana desperately tried to carry the tune, watching/playing golf, following WNBA basketball ("they actually run plays!") and his Philly teams ("the Eggles"), doing crossword puzzles/Sudokus, going on bike rides around town, exercising on his stationary bike, and reading everything imaginable. But one of the main things I'll always remember is him taking us out on his sailboat.
It was such a joy to see him love every bit of being out on the water in the gorgeous weather, and feeling the rush of wind as we sailed along. We would explore the wetlands and other parts of the bay before coming back and getting ready for, you guessed it, cocktail hour. He adored making everyone their gin and tonics ("5/8ths, no.. 7/8ths of a shot!") and always gave a hefty "Granddad-pour" of wine to my Nana with a little bit of ice to cool it down.
He passed away in early March of 2017, but his life continues through all of the amazing memories my family has of him. I wanted to dedicate this song to him and to all of the incredible times I had growing up at the shore with my Nana and Granddad. Love you, Granddad!
